Homes of Hope
Homes of Hope – Build a house in Africa!
„The "Homes of Hope" project is an unforgettable experience for all those who want to see the world from a different perspective. I'll recommend it to anyone!" - Travis Tjio, participant 2008
GoAhead! has two core ambitions: reducing poverty in Africa and raising awareness in the western world. The Homes of Hope (HoH) project combines those goals in a unique way.
Twice a year, GoAhead! sends ten young people on a four week mission to one of our partner projects in Africa, so far in South Africa and Uganda. The group helps the project to construct or repair buildings, visit other projects and participate in organised weekend trips. In a nutshell, HoH is a study tour which allows people from the western world to get involved in an often unimaginable reality.
HoH is chiefly financed by the participants themselves. Naturally, the idea is not for them to spend their own money but to raise funds by building a donor circle.
The two main reasons are that GoAhead! needs to focus its limited donation funds on projects where money cannot be raised by volunteers, and that the HoH volunteers raise awareness of the situation in Africa through the process of fundraising.
Each participant is expected to contribute 400 Euro to the building costs, plus their own flight tickets, insurance and such. While fundraising sounds like a daunting task, GoAhead! supports volunteers with advice, materials or anything else they may need to succeed. Fundraising is a focus during the compulsory preparation weekend. You will be surprised how happy people are to support you in doing something as amazing as going to Africa as a development volunteer!
In the end, Homes of Hope is all about your motivation, your drive to know more about poverty in Africa, your initiative and your hands! GoAhead! provides a framework, and in that respect we are always available to help you help.
Unfortunately, the HoH project is currently limited to German participants. While we obviously have no intention of excluding anyone, we are subject to certain organisational constraints. The preparation weekend is essential for organising the group, and for you to meet your fellow travellers. If you speak German, and would be willing to travel to Germany for the weekend, please see the German version of this page for detailed information on applications, finances and deadlines.
