29/12/2009: GoAhead! visits partner projects in South Africa

jozeilGoAhead!'s deputy chair, Tilman Rodenhaeuser, has spent the past two weeks visiting our partner projects in South Africa. After a meeting with the Heartbeat management in Pretoria he spent two days in the region impacted by the GoAhead! sponsored Learning Centre. We were very impressed on both occasions.

At the same time, the Jozini region where the Learning Centre supports 450 orphans was a lesson in how desperately further help is needed. In Jozini, official estimates have 80% of adults HIV positive. In the rural areas there are no roads, mostly no electricity and not even clean water. More households are run by grannies than by actual parents.

Back in Pretoria, we participated in the graduation celebration for the Youth Ambassadors. Supported by the Baden-Wuerttemberg Foundation, GoAhead! initiated this program in early 2009. We were very happy with the 24 young ambassadors and are determined to continue the project next year.

The second region visited was, of course, Cato Ridge in KwaZulu Natal. In the 'Valley of 1000 hills' the HIV prevalence is among the highest in the entire world. The meetings with our partners God's Golden Acre and the '1000 Hills Community Helper' were encouraging. On the other hand, the stories and human fates we encountered were hard to take in.
Tilman RodenhäuserThe KwaZulu Natal region which hosts the majority of our partner projects is not only the poorest area in South Africa, but also an epicentre of the worldwide HIV pandemic. "On christmas I am particularly worried", says Heartbeat worker Billy. "This is the time when normal families enjoy their time together and give presents. But all the orphans have no one who gives them presents. In this moment, the loss is particularly hard. This makes me very sad."

24/12/2009: A christmas message from the GoAhead! team

Frohe WeihnachtenAs the year is coming to an end, we look back at an exciting and productive time. Thanks to our member support we could fulfill the 100% guarantee and check in situ that all the money arrived at the intended recipients. In South Africa, we also filmed our image movie 'GoAhead! visiting projects'. Thanks to the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg film team and Silke Kaiser who accompanied us!

We could expand our involvement in Africa: the Learning centre is now being used by 447 AIDS orphans, the Youth Ambassadors are receiving their training, there were exchange projects and the pre-school children continued to receive a solid education.

Our membership has grown as well, with currently more than 400 members. We are present through local groups in over 10 cities, and organised more than one campaign per week, on average.

Merry christmas!

01/12/2009: World AIDS Day: HIV/AIDS still has a drastic impact

Welt-Aids-TagDecember 1st is world AIDS day. On this day, GoAhead! is particularly active through its college groups. We attempt to give a short overview of the current situation: looking at the UN AIDS report 2008, it is obvious how urgently steps need to be taken to stop the expansion of the pandemic.

Worldwide more than 33 million people, children and adults, are infected. In 2007 alone, 2.7 million new infections were recorded. About 11.6 million children have lost their parents due to AIDS. In 2010, an estimated 15 million children will be orphans due to the pandemic.

South Africa is home to 1.4 million AIDS orphans, a staggering number. About half a million of them are without any support. More than 118.000 live in so-called "child-headed households" without an adult responsible for them, only two thirds of them even finish primary school.

28/09/2009: GoAhead! receives the "startsocial" consulting scholarship

startsocial
"Help for Helpers" - with this mission the "startsocial" competition supports since 2001 the knowledge transfer between private companies and social organizations. Under the patronage of chancellor Angela Merkel, social initiatives are supported through individual consulting and networks between them and the companies are created.

For the coming consulting period, GoAhead! has been selected alongside 100 other projects from almost 400 applications. The consulting will focus on a specific day of events planned by GoAhead! for the next year, as well as on general advice on the future structuring of the organization.

The consulting period will start next week with a meeting in Mainz, Germany, and will last till December. Consequently, a selection committee will choose 25 projects to be invited to Berlin for a prize ceremony. The seven best projects will receive a prize money.

We are very delighted to have been chosen for this scholarship and are looking forward to working with our two coaches Ute Schmidt and Thomas Wieland. [www.startsocial.de]

16/09/2009: Homes of Hope in Uganda successfully completed

hohAfter four weeks of laying bricks, cementing and plastering under the Ugandan heat, this summer's "Homes of Hope" group returned last week to Germany.

The group, which built the ground level of a house for the youth organization "Rainbow House of Hope" in Kampala, consisted of Maren Bittermann Katharina Burgmann, Tobias Hensel, Karo Hermann, Martin Pregeler, Andre Prochanzka, Joachim Schurr and trip leader Johannes Hillje. The organization utilize the new building on the one hand to accommodate volunteers and on the other as a site for workshops with children from the neighbourhood. The construction went more or less as planned. During a very memorable night shift, the group even stayed on until midnight to finish the concrete of the ceiling.

Besides doing construction work, the group also got to know better the country, the people and the culture. On the weekends, a safari, a trip to some lake islands and Nile-rafting were part of the program. Shortly before their departure, they even had the chance to attend a traditional engagement celebration, to which the founder of Rainbow House, Michael Mwase had invited them.

Another part og the focus were visits to other NGOs and projects. This way, the group witnessed how in an orphanage in Fort Portal 28 children have to live together in a tightly cramped space, how a breakdance project improved the lives of many young people and learned in a "Health Center" about the extent of the AIDS pandemic and their prevention strategies.

GoAhead! would like to thank all participants for their great involvement. The application phase for the next Homes-of-Hope-project (presumably in March 2010) will start shortly. More information will soon be available on our homepage.

At the same time, the two high school students advertised this effort as a charity run for GoAhead! and found several local sponsors.

They started their journey right at the beginning of the holidays and in the end returned to Germany with a big gain in experience and the memory of many exciting encounters.

Soon you will be able to read a more detailed report of their journey on this website.

08/09/2009: Second General Meeting in Kassel

mitgliederversammlungOn the 30th of August 2009, about 20 members of GoAhead! came together in Kassel for the second general meeting in the history of the organization. In addition to the borard elections, a change of the organization charter and other points on the official agenda, the meeting offered several new members the opportunity to get to know the rest of the team. After the general meeting, the board came together with several staff members to discuss the strategic issues of the upcoming twelve months.

After a greeting, the chairman Jan Bildhauer reviewed the last year. Consequently, the section managers presented their results: GoAhead! was able to make progress in all areas and is very happy about the voluntary and very professional commitment of its many members of staff and associates.

Mitarbeiter

Another result was a change in the charter: As proposed by the board, the term in office of future board members will be shortened to one year. Thus, especially the two chairmen can be replaced more easily, if a longer stay abroad should necessitate such change. After the previous board was discharged from liability by the general meeting, elections of a new board ensued. Carolin Bader an Jan-Martin Frie have abdicated their positions on the board due to stays abroad. On behalf of the entire organization we would like to thank both of them for their great collaboration and their untiring commitment to our young organization. In the elections, Jan Bildhauer was chosen as the Chairman, Tilman Rodenhäuser as the Deputy Chairman, Wolfgang Bildhauer as the Treasurer. Furthermore, David Steinacker and Johannes Hilje were confirmed in their positions. In addition, Angela Steffens, who has been leading the Heidelberg University group for a year and Tobias Maaßen, the leader of Pro Active will join the board as first-time members - welcome!

Neuer VorstandThe entire board is looking forward to the coming year and hopes to be able to continue counting on your support. A special thanks after this intensive weekend goes to the Rodenhäuser family in Kassel, who organized the meeting and provided the hungry GoAhead! members with cake and other snacks.

05/09/2009: GoAhead! at the Rotary Club Kulmbach

rotaryDuring the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club Kulmbach, on the 21.08.2009, Lena Haap and Tilman Rodenhäuser held a talk about the work that GoAhead! has done during the last two years, as well as the rapid development of the organization in Germany and the projects it supports in South Africa. Above all, they focused on the Learning Center, which was constructed last year with major assistance by the RC Schwalmstadt and has since then been partly maintained by GoAhead!.

GoAhead! would like to thank the Rotary Club Kulmbach and above all Mr. Peter Wendt for the opportunity to present its work in this setting. The support by the Rotarians has constantly been an essential for the work and success of our organization - a fact for which we would like to express our gratitude at this point.

16/08/2009: Start of Homes of Hope in Uganda – reports available on blog

hohThis week marked the beginning of the fourth Homes of Hope project organised by GoAhead! . A group of  eight young people set out on the journey to Kampala, Uganda. In collaboration with the project partner “Rainbow House of Hope Uganda”, they will build a home for Rainbow House activities in the next four weeks. That house is meant to be used above all for workshops for the children in the project, but also as a residence for volunteers.

The group of participants, consisting of Andre, Achim, Katharina, Karo, Maren and Martin, had spent the previous weeks in Germany raising the money needed to finance the construction material. This time, the project will be led by Johannes Hillje.

The start of construction was marked at the beginning of the week by a celebration. Stefan Messerer, representing the German embassy in Uganda, laid the foundation and held an opening speech. The group will report the events of the coming weeks, the construction progress and all other activities on a blog: [www.bildung-fuer-afrika.de/homesofhope]

09/07/2009: “Go Africa” – A GoAhead! charity concert in Dresden
benefizkonzertOn wednesday, the 1st of July 2009, more than 160 people were celebrating for a good cause. The GoAhead! university group in Dresden was behind the organisation of the  event and the “Burning Knees” and the “Staircase Clup” provided the musical entertainment.

Several weeks of preparation and promotion preceded the  event. Eventually, however, GoAhead! member Lena Haap was able to report her satisfaction: “After the very successful concert last year, we had high expectations. Luckily, these were even surpasses!” The Dresden branch organised an information booth during the concerts, sold snacks and shirts and was able to get many visitors excited about its work and raise interest in GoAhead!. Even from a financial point of view it was a full success: Through ticket sales, donations and a “Charity Drink”, 700 € were collected and went without deductions to GoAhead! and thus 100% of it will benefit our partners in Africa. This year, the received money will again support our Learning Centre in Jozini, KwaZulu Natal. GoAhead! would like to thank both of the bands all those who helped to make the evening so successful!

27/06/2009: Homes of Hope orientation meeting in Kassel, Germany

photoAfter several months of promotion, GoAhead! has now been able to finalise the group that will be building a house in August 2009 for a project with street children in Uganda. With this “Homes of Hope”- project  GoAhead! will be able to connect the two goals of direct aid in Africa and awareness promotion in Germany.

The group will spend the remaining time before the trip raising money and spreading the word about their project. This way, the young volunteers’ determination to learn about poverty and adress it directly will maybe spread as well.

From the 29/05 to the 31/05 an orientation meeting took place in a youth hostel in Kassel. The participants came from all parts of Germany to get to know each other and get some advice and suggestions to take away with them. In a relaxed atmosphere the project leader, Jan-Martin Frie, the travel leader, Johannes Hillje, and the leader of the previous group, Julian Peitzmeier, prepared the participants for the situation awaiting them in Uganda, using presentations.

GoAhead! wishes an enjoyable trip full of new experiences to Katharina Burgmann, Lena Enderlein, Tobias Hensel, André Prochazka, Maren Bitterman, Martin Pregler, Joachim Surr and Karoline Herrmann.

25/06/2009: Workshop at the MANOS-Gymnasium in Dresden

FotoOn the 12th of June 2009, the student government of the Martin-Andersen-Nexö-Gymnasium organised the established “TAG” workshop day about tolerance, foreign affairs and society. GoAhead! took advantage of this opportunity and organised a workshop about “South Africa, Poverty and Aids: Problems and Perspectives” for 19 students of the 8th to 10th grade of the school. After the workshop, the students had the opprtunity to exhibit their work and results in a final presentation.

One part of the workshop concept is simulation in which the students found a fictitious NGO to convince and enthuse sponsors – represented by the workshop leaders – for a plan of action against poverty or Aids. The winner, “ElfA – A Smile for Africa” impressed with commitment and creativity, but above all, the young participants impressed with their mature ability to reflect about, and analyse, the complex issues at hand.

23/06/2009: New Project in Kapstadt for the Volunteer Program

photoGoAhead! has found a new partner for volunteering in South Africa: Hope Cape Town. For over a year now, Hope Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and Kid Cru, another NGO, have been jointly offering an attractive clinical elective program for students of medicine. On the one hand, it offers prospective doctors an insight into the work of an aid organisation (Hope Cape Town) that works within the townships and runs several hospitals there. On the other hand, Kid Cru provides an experience in the field of HIV/Aids-research. This way, the “Elective Student Program” offers young doctors the possibility of being part of the fight against the HIV pandemic at multiple levels. Due to the involvement of the University Stellenbosch, the program is normally also recognized as the clinial elective for students from Germany.

After all, the organisation Hope Cape Town is not a complete stranger to GoAhead!: Multiple visits to the NGO and its founder Stefan Hippler in Kapstadt and joint deliberations regarding aid projects preceded the collaboration.

We are looking forward to working together with the well run and recognized aid organisation that is Hope Cape Town.

10/06/2009: GoAhead! staff workshop in Berlin

Johannes Hillje und Tilman Rodenhäuser referierenAfter strenuous weeks of organization, the first official co-worker meeting of GoAhead! took place in Berlin from May 22nd until May 24th, 2009. Altogether 29 active members came from all parts of Germany. During the last weeks, the board members Johannes Hillje and Tilman Rodenhäuser had prepared a wide-ranging workshop, arranged reports and presentations and planned the organizational part of the meeting.

After a short introduction circle on Friday evening, the official workshop started early on Saturday morning. Hillje and Rodenhäuser talked at first about the history, the basic ideas and the structure of GoAhead!. After an intensive working phase within the individual working fields, the well-known media scientist Steffen Büffel spoke about the possibilities of Web 2.0 for GoAhead! Afterwards, we discussed the schedule for the coming year and ideas for further projects and events. Of course, the workshop should also help to strengthen the relationships between the co-workers, which had been successfully realized with a relaxed barbeque and camp fire in the evening.
GruppenfotoOn Sunday morning, after a big evaluation breakfast, all participants went back home again, highly motivated, to put the newly acquired knowledge and ideas into action as soon as possible. Altogether, the co-worker meeting was in every aspect a full success. Each co-worker could take with him/her personally or for his/her area new ideas or possibilities for realization. The increased knowledge of the structures and the thoughts behind GoAhead!, as well as the personal contacts among each other will be helping to do our work even more effective and successful in the future.

A special thank you goes once again to Steffen Büffel and his informative as well as inspiring report and to the team of the university in Berlin, which charmed the group with their delicious food during the whole weekend.

04/06/2009: Another Visit at the Pastoral Pre-School
pastoral vorschule besuch
v.l. Go Ahead!ler Dominik, Mando und Jan (Vorsitzender) zusammen mit der Leiterin Pam und Kindern

On the 21st of May 2009 the chairman of GoAhead!, Jan Bildhauer, and two new members visited the Pastoral pre-school in Kliptown, Soweto. The visit could be called very successful for multiple reasons:

The auditing of finances, which had to be postponed due to time constraints during the last tour, was completed and the result was very positive. In the week prior to the visit, the pre-school had also received the external financial audit report for 2008, which showed no shortcomings.

In addition, a sponsorship sign reading "Go Ahead! - Supporting Education in Africa", sponsored by the company BVS, was delivered and installed.

Finally, Jan Bildhauer was able to announce to the Pastoral pre-school that GoAhead! would provide the requested funds for repairing the floor in the classroom of the three- and four-year-olds. Almost 1000 Euros will be needed to renew the floor and insulate it from moisture and cold temperatures, as the children have to take their afternoon naps on it. This will be especially necessary, given that in South Africa the winter is now starting. For this purpose GoAhead! donations will be used - thank you to all supporters!!

02/06/2009: GoAhead! celebrates its second Anniversary

geburtstagTwo years ago, on the 26th of May 2007, GoAhead! was founded by a group of 6 very motivated volunteers and since then the team has grown to comprise more than 30 volunteers working for the young aid organisation. In addition, seven local groups have been founded at universities in Germany and even in the USA. Within mere 24 months we gained over 300 members all over the country and were able to raise and transfer a six-digit amount for our project partners in Africa in the second year. Last year we focused on a Learning Centre in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal which aims to provide a safe learning environment for 400 children. Since the foundation of GoAhead! we were also able to give 130 children the opportunity to attend a preschool through our Early Education Program and find a private sponsor for 27 more.

Another big success has been the "Homes for Hope" project. For the fourth time now we have led a group of young people from Germany to Africa over the summer to work in a development project during their semester break. Looking back, the last two years have meant a rapid and very successful expansion of GoAhead! The budding young initiative has become a countrywide-operating NGO with a solid support base of members and volunteers that have already achieved significant successes. We would like to thank all our supporters, sponsors and members without whom our work and these achievements would not have been possible! In the coming years, we hope to build upon the past successes and thus be able to expand support for our projects in Africa.

27/05/2009: Important Support for the Learning Center
übergabe
Der Vorsitzende von Go Ahead! Jan Bildhauer bei der Übergabe des neuen Autos an Heartbeat (HB) (v. r. HB Direktorin Maryke Venter, Jan Bildhauer, HB Programs Manager Charmaine Steyn)

In collaboration with the Rotary Club Schwarmstedt Aller-Leine-Tal, GoAhead! was able to make another step on the way towards establishing a Learning Center in KwaZulu-Natal: An appropriate transport vehicle (see picture) was handed over to the Heartbeat organisation and will enable them to move better in the region around Jozini, which had been hard to reach and is plagued by a lack of infrastructure. This car will be necessary, on the one hand, to visit the 400 AIDS orphans at home, who will receive support by Heartbeat in the future, and on the other hand, to implement the training of the community members and organisations involved in the project.
"We have a lot of logistical problems in the rural areas of South Africa. Thanks to this new car these are now history", explains Pethole Seondi, the head of the Learning Center.

Asked about the support from Germany, Seondi said: "The assistance of GoAhead! and Rotary is fundamental for the implementation of our local sustainability principle with the younger students."

11/05/2009: A Visit at the GoAhead! college group in Princeton, USA
usaIn April 2009 GoAhead! board member David Steinacker took the opportunity of a private visit to the United States to make a short stop at our college group at Princeton University in New Jersey. Although it was founded very recently, the group has already a meeting with the "Soweto Gospel Choir" and a gumboot dance workshop on its record. Up to now, there are already eight members at the university, hailing from four different countries (see picture: David Steinacker and four Princeton members). They are highly motivated and determined to hold events and promote GoAhead! actively as an official group on the Princeton campus starting next fall.

afrikatageOn Saturday, April 25th, 2009, GoAhead! could take the opportunity to present itself during the African Days in Friedrichshafen and to introduce GoAhead! to interested people. The one-hour report about "future through education, old problems and new perspectives in South Africa" was met with a warm reception and made the people sensitive for this subject. Afterwards, many of them showed up fascinated at the GoAhead! information stand and were interested in passing on the idea of GoAhead!. GoAhead! would like to return thanks to namibiakids association for the invitation and wishes all the best for the upcoming house building project in Namibia.

A big thank you goes as well to the five GoAhead! members who initiated the information stand.

06/05/2009: Europahaus Hamburg: Go Ahead!-Soliparty
hamburgThe last January newly founded GoAhead! high-school group (HSG) Hamburg managed its first action successfully. The group consisting of students of different subjects like social economics, political economics, woodwork economics and physics organized a "soliparty" for the „Learning Center". On April 17th, 2009, all sorts of people met in the Hamburg students´ hostel, the Europahaus to have a party together with the HSG Hamburg. It was especially pleasing to have so many international guests from the hostel who celebrated with us spontaneously. The party was a great success and a wonderful entry of the HSG Hamburg, who had a lot of fun behind the bar. Above all, we got hunger for more. With this first event we received almost 300 €, which will be donated to the Learning Centre. Are you interested in supporting the HSG Hamburg and GoAhead!? 29/04/2009: Project-Update: Learning Centre KwaZulu-Natal

learning centerSince last year, GoAhead! is significantly supporting the building of a learning centre in KwaZuluNatal. Last week GoAhead! met again with the management of our partner organization Heartbeat, to make a formal evaluation of the last six month, since the project started in October 2008. Following the plan of general project reporting, we were talking about the progress as well as the financial situation of the project. The Learning-Centre-Project meets our expectations fully and, apart from some smaller delays during the implementation, there were no problems at all. On one hand, the delays concerned the logistics and are due to the poor infrastructure of the region, on the other hand the elections of the coming week caused a slowing down of the political processes.Based on the information in hand, GoAhead! decided to financially support the Learning Centre in KwaZulu-Natal sponsored by us for another year. The decision of the board is entirely following the GoAhead!-idea of long-term supporting.

Projects we have taken up must be safeguarded financially as well as concerning the organization, especially during the period of implementation, before they can be handled by the community itself. To make sure that this will be working on a long-term basis, Heartbeat already made first contacts with the „Department of Social Development" (DSD). The DSD is interested in a cooperation and would like to visit the project as soon as possible. In accordance with our idea of long-term supporting, Hearteat and GoAhead! would retire from the position of the main financing organization at a suitable time (usually after three years). The assistance and training programmes of Heartbeat would of course be carried on.We are hoping for active support of all members, friends and co-workers of GoAhead! regarding this decision. More information you will find on our homepage.

26/04/2009: Homes of Hope 2009 (part 1) successfully finished

hoh„Mission accomplished", one could say, looking back to the altogether successful Homes-of-Hope-Project in Uganda in March, leaving a community house, ready to move in. Together with a highly motivated group, GoAhead! could, besides the already rented building, also complete another building nearby in Nsambya, a district of the capital Kampala for the organization Rainbow House of Hope Uganda. The progress of the construction work as well as our free time activities, have been constantly published in the weblog.

During these four weeks, we have not only built a very pleasant house; all participants also had the opportunity to get to know the very hospitable people in Uganda and their beautiful country. Finally we all flew back home - full of impressions and experiences and of course with the burning wish to come back as soon as possible. Therefore, we are happy to be able to accompany another group of young people to Uganda in August 2009, to build for the same partner an accommodation for further helpers on the recently acquired ground.

23/04/2009: Volunteers in Usakos Needy Children project

usakoSince 2008, GoAhead! is organizing volunteers for the Usakos Needy Children project. There, young people help the 30 poorest children of a township in Usakos with their homework, promote their sense of hygiene and are, among other things, responsible for social care for example during physical education lessons and games.

The latest care delivery of namibiakids e.V. contained also sponsored school bags for the project, which were an appreciated attraction. Many of those bags included the address of the child who gave it, so that the children in Usakos could write letters to the German sponsors. Those letters have already arrived in Germany and are maybe the beginning of some German-Namibian pen friendships.

Would you also like to be a volunteer at Usakos? Then please contact us.

20/04/2009: GoAhead!-Studytour: Looking back and forward

studytourFor two weeks, the 12 members of the GoAhead! study tour travelled through South Africa. Central points were the meeting with the responsible people of our partner projects, the intercultural exchange with people of the same age as well as discussions with representatives of the development cooperation in South Africa. The group was visiting the supported early learning centres (Pastoral, Sekhethimpilo, Crafcor and Number 9) as well as the GoAhead! partner organizations (Heartbeat, God´s Golden Acre and Zimele) and also possible new project partners, with which there was no contact so far.

studytour2In addition to the tour programme of the group, which consisted mainly in visiting the projects and the intercultural exchange with children and young people, the two board members Jan Bildhauer and Tilman Rodenhäuser met with the managements of the partner projects. They spoke about the current situation and cooperation, the personal contact was intensified and they made an examination concerning money donated via GoAhead!.

Additionally to the annual external financial report, who is before GoAhead!, both board members could certify the partners an appropriate use. On request, members can have a look at the financial reports.
studytour3The impressions, the whole group had during the tour were terrifying and in a positive sense overwhelming at the same time. Terrifying with regard to the even now tense situation for the people there. Especially the AIDs orphans are still very badly affected. In the course of the making of the film documentation showing the situation of AID´s orphans, we were visiting several Child-headed und Granny-headed Households.

We made good experiences with regard to the fact that our mutual efforts already bear fruit and that we found acknowledgment for our work and all our efforts. Thanks to everyone who was part of these efforts.

A detailed description of the tour can be found on our Weblog, the results of the visits of our partner projects are filed in a Final report (pdf) (in German) of the tour.

15/04/2009: Volunteers enable children to visit  game park Harnas

namAlthough they have spent their whole life in Namibia, only a few of the children of the Mphe Thuto school ever had the possibility to watch the wild animals of their country. Most people in Namibia cannot afford travelling to and paying the entrance fees for a game park. Thanks to the volunteers Heike Stilgenbauer, Christoph Pauli and Fabien Olsem, the leader of the GoAhead! group in Trier and also to further sponsors from Germany, 16 children of the Mphe Thuto school could for the first time in their lives watch lions, leopards and crocodiles in the Harnas game park. For all of them, it was an incredible experience to finally see all those animals for which Namibia is so popular.

GoAhead! co-worker Barbara Scharfbillig also spent one week in the Mphe Thuto primary school. Together with teachers, helpers, volunteers, sponsors and pupils she was evaluating the current programme for the assistants. Especially the pupils had a lot of new ideas and suggestions. For the year 2009 the school is looking forward to have six volunteers, who want to assist teachers and pupils during the lessons. Furthermore, GoAhead! is looking for volunteers who could give a hand to the hostel of the school, would help with the ill children and be of assistance with cooking and homework.

Are you interested? Please contact Barbara Scharfbillig (b.scharfbillig@goahead-organisation.de) or visit the Website of the school www.mphethuto.de. Mphe Thuto is part of the GoAhead! Volunteering Program

01/03/2009: Go Ahead!-Studytour in March 2009 – Reports at Weblog

studytourBeginning of March (March 1st to March 15th) the GoAhead! studytour will take place. At first, the board members Jan and Tilman had planned a private journey. However, during the last months, a whole group of GoAhead! members and supporters came together and decided to pay a common visit to our partner projects in South Africa, together with a South African social worker. The central point will be the meetings with the responsible people of our partner projects, the intercultural exchange with people of the same age and discussions with representatives of the common work in the development sector in South Africa. The intention of visit of the projects is to deepen our relationships and at the same time to ensure the correct use of the donations transferred by our organization.

The group will be accompanied by a team of the film academy Babelsberg. Under the direction of Silke Kaiser there will be shoot a short documentation on the work of GoAhead! as well as a report about the social consequences of the AIDS pandemic. The main question will be which consequences AIDS has for the lives of children, for young people who are already heads of a family and for grandmothers who care for the children of their late relatives.

The journey and the experiences of the group can be daily pursued in the corresponding Blog on the GoAhead! homepage.

26/02/2009: GoAhead! Workshop at Zinzendorfschulen

workshopOn February 4th and 5th, 2009, GoAhead! was able to realize for the second time a workshop at the Zinzendorfschulen in Königsfeld with the subject “South Africa, poverty and AIDS – problems and chances. During this workshop, 15 students and six GoAhead! members could very intensively focus on poverty and HIV/AIDS in South Africa. We were very excited to see that all students were extremely interested in the work of GoAhead! They were especially enquiring about personal experiences concerning voluntary engagement.

auszeichnung

At the end of two days full of exchange of ideas and information, we invited other students, parents and interested people from outside the school. The students took the opportunity to present what they had learned and acquired with posters.

We are very happy about this repeated cooperation with the Zinzendorfschulen. A special thank you goes to Brother Fischer, who made it possible for us to draw the attention of young people on political development.

13/02/2009: GoAhead!  report at the Rotary Club Soltau

rotaryOn February 10th, 2009, our co-worker Tobias Maaßen was invited by the Rotary Club Soltau and introduced GoAhead! to the present Rotary members. In his introduction, he described the situation in South Africa and spoke about the efforts of GoAhead! in Germany and South Africa, the development of the “Learning Center” project in 2009 and the new “Youth Ambassador Program”.  Afterwards, there was a lively discussion. The members were quite interested and impressed by the endeavours of GoAhead! and its development in such a short period of time.

We are indeed very glad about that possibility offered by the Rotary Club and would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to Mr. Jürgen Niemeyer, Mr. Andreas Bock and the Rotary Club Soltau. A special thank you goes to Mr. Bernd Piorunek, who – spontaneously – picked up our co-worker by car: due to construction work, some trains were late, which normally would have made the report impossible.

If you are also interested in information about GoAhead! in your club or organisation, please do not hesitate to contact us – we are looking forward to meeting you!

07/02/2009: Logo-Board : „Sponsored by GoAhead!“ – Sponsored by BVS

bvsThe BVS Blechtechnik (sheet-metal products) company, directed by the Steiner family and one of the leading companies in Europe for 20 years, made it possible that GoAhead! is now making big eyes over its own logo-board.

Harald Steiner, managing director, was immediately ready to build metal boards with the GoAhead! logo in high quality. Those can now be used as sign-boards for our supported projects in Afrcia. During the coming “studytour”, we will be handing over one of these signs to all of our early learning centres and education centres.

In this sense we would like to thank the Steiner family for their kind support!

jammin“Jammin for Children” was only a small event when it started at Christmas 2002 in the youth centre in Starnberg. Meanwhile it is one of the biggest student parties in Munich. On December 22, 2008, Simon Mayer and a large team of volunteers organized the „Jammin“ in the „Registratur“, a club in Munich. About 800 students and friends were celebrating together with the Bands Portmanteau and Flow. Later in the evening, the DJ´s Dusty (Jazz&Milk), a friend of mine (exLatino), Mr Fazee Fantasee und der Mayer cared for good music. All in all the “Jammin for Children” lead to 3.500 Euro for our donation account! The organizer was giving 2.900 Euro, 620 Euro were sponsored by the “Registratur”. Half of the sum will flow into the first Homes of Hope project 2009 in Uganda. 27/01/2009: „Youth Ambassador Program“ YAP

yapSupported by the „Landesstiftung (foundation) Baden-Württemberg“  and in cooperation with our partner Heartbeat in South Africa, GoAhead! will be initiating the “Youth Ambassador Program” (YAP) in 2009.

Together with Heartbeat, GoAhead! has planned this program and is organizing a thorough preparation for the “ambassadors”. Thus we enable young South Africans to fight the problems of their generation for themselves and to communicate their interests. Those youth ambassadors, trained and promoted by GoAhead! and the foundation, will draw the attention in their communities and schools on everyday social problems and difficulties, and thus be advocates for the partly forgotten orphans. At the same time, they will be included in the work of Heartbeat and can be of assistance to adapt their help programs better and better for the benefit of the supported children. At the end of the year, one out of the twelve trained youth ambassadors will be chosen to be a board member of Heartbeat.

As an organization, lead by young people, we from GoAhead! are especially happy to be able to initiate this program. In this manner, young South Africans get the chance to bring themselves in and to form their society in the same way as we try it in Germany. The YAP is also a possibility to start a genuine cooperation between people of different cultures and social backgrounds. The exchange of ideas between young people of South Africa and Germany can contribute to mutual understanding.

23/01/2009: Board meeting January 10th,  2009 in Walsrode
vorstand
Unfortunately, all female board members and division managers were unable to attend

For the second time, the half-yearly appointed board meeting took place on January 10th, 2009 in Walsrode. Along with the board members, this time the division managers were also invited. After a financial report by treasurer Wolfgang Bildhauer, the meeting was opened with some less important decisions. There was an intense discussion concerning projects and aims for 2009. At first, the GoAhead! board evaluated the current projects. The continuation of the programmes for 2009 was settled. Our project of the year 2008, the Learning Centre in KwaZulu Natal, will be financially supported by GoAhead! in the future as well, the programme for the nursery school will probably be expanded and the Child Sponsorship Program will be strengthened through various specific actions.

In addition, we made plans for three projects in 2009 through which young Germans will be travelling to Uganda and South Africa for an intercultural exchange: Two "Homes of Hope" projects and one study tour. Furthermore, GoAhead! would like to develop its work in Germany: In 2009, the efforts of the University groups will have priority, and more workshops at schools will be realized. Besides that, GoAhead! wants to organize a meeting in spring with all co-workers and helpers, to discuss future aims.

On Saturday late at night, we had a discussion about how to use the manpower and facilities as efficient as possible in view of the intended projects. The year 2009 seems to become another exciting and busy one for the GoAhead!team. After more than ten hours of talking and discussing, all board members and division managers present were relieved to have a schedule for 2009. The ambitious and widespread aim of 2009 is to continue with the achievements of last year. GoAhead! would like to say thank you once more to the Steinacker family in Walsrode for their hospitality. We were also happy that it was possible for the board members who could not be present personally to take part at our meeting via telephone.

20/01/2009: Second Christmas Party
xmasAfter the Christmas party of the Moppedgang together with the KJG Neuhausen (katholic youth group) had been a great success already last year, the friends decided to celebrate together on December 25th 2008, in the hall of the Ettwein company in Villingen, which could again be used free of charge. Next to Indie and electronic music presented by DJ Hackepeter, not less than three live-acts were on the program. After solo performances of Steve with African sounds and Marius on the guitar, the band We are… took very good care that spirits were high from midnight on. More than 350 guests were dancing until daybreak and at the same time cared for our donation account. At the end of the day they had given more than 1100 Euro into the GoAhead! cash-box. GoAhead! says a big thank you to everybody who was helping in any way. We hope to be able to continue with this Christmas tradition also next year.

16/01/2009: Donation target is reached! Learning Centre Project can start
learningcenterAt the beginning of December, there was still a lack of 10.000 Euro to reach the GoAhead! donation target. Today we are happy to be able to announce: we made it! We can now book the missing 10.000 Euro as donations on our account, and within a much shorter time than expected! GoAhead! says thank you to all supporters who made this possible, as well as to all sponsors for their generous donations. Especially during Christmas time the necessary financial means for the benefit of the Learning Centre (LC) could be secured for the year 2009. We are now about to secure an enduring operation of the LC until the end of the year 2010. GoAhead! guarantees that 100 % of your donations will reach that project and the children. In February/March, the board members personally will be able to see for themselves that the money is used correctly when they spend a private visit at the LC.From February on, our partner organization "Heartbeat" will be starting their work. 400 AIDS-orphans will be offered a secure environment for learning, a warm lunch, psychological care, workshops, physical education as well as general assistance. 03/01/2009: „That tastes like more“ – Christmas markets in the Black Forest
basarAs in former years, GoAhead! was represented on the Christmas markets in Königsfeld and surroundings. In Erdmannsweiler as well as in Königsfeld, eight GoAhead! members informed the visitors from morning till evening in beautifully decorated stands about our organization and current projects. On both markets, people were charmed by the aroma of an East African beef-stew and the fragrance of a home-made winter-bowl. Furthermore, handmade necklaces, key-rings and straw-stars were offered. Homemade jam and liqueurs and - above all - African shooters covered a bigger part of the counter and offered a great look. We especially appreciated the spontaneous idea of a candidate for the coming A-levels to sell wonderful Crêpes and donate the profit to GoAhead! After a whole day on the move, we were more than content with the excellent result of 1.188,10 Euros. Thanks to every helping and supporting hand. We wish you a merry Christmas.
