Our Soundtrack: Jamaram
The band Jamaram from Munich becomes a pre-school sponsor
Music for the people
"Mouth to mouth is the best propaganda", Tom Lugo claims, referring to his band's 500 concerts. Starting with a cardboard box and the idea to support GoAhead!'s first "Homes of Hope" project, Jamaram collected more than 7000€ in one year. Surprised themselves what an effect a small announcement during a gig can have, the band decided to keep helping and give GoAhead! some extra publicity. Now they support the „Sekhethimpilo” pre-school in South Africa. „Sekhethimpilo” is situated in Zonkizizwe, a township of Katlehong, Gauteng province, South Africa.
At the moment, about 30 children aged 2-6 are taught at the school. Staff include three qualified teachers, a cook and a director. The kids are split into three age groups, 2-3, 3-4 and 5-6. What makes the project special is that it is the only school in Zonkizizwe which supports orphaned or vulnerable children (OVC).
In cooperation with GoAhead! and our partner Heartbeat Jamaram enable these orphans to go to school and get back a bit of normal life.
Music is our language
But Jamaram insist they also want to judge the situation themselves. „For 2008 we are planning a trip to Uganda, to have a jam session with some school kids“, says Lugo whose daytime job is to teach music. He has a simple message: there is one language everybody understands, music. „This is about intercultural communication“, adds drummer Murxen Alberti. „Our music brings very different people together. We know no borders, we'll play anywhere.“
This is why the winners of the Bavarian World Music Award are on tour for the entire year, also to spread their message and the GoAhead!'s vision.
Go Ahead! and of course the children in South Africa are most grateful for Jamarams active support and hope for a great partnership in the future. These boys rock!
